  47.          a final  -e  can be dropped before adding the  í ending,
  48.          but that a final -a  cannot be dropped. There is no
  49.          difference in pronunciation here -- both the -e and the
  50.          -a  are pronounced  [@] -- and -í  and -aí in the plural
  51.          are both pronounced  [i:]. The -e can be dropped but the
  52.          -a must be retained because of the "broad with broad,
  53.          slender with slender spelling rule. This rule is
  54.          explained in #4-C.
